Itinerary

Day 1Ulaanbaatar

Arrive at Chinggis Khaan International Airport of Ulaanbaatar. Pick up and transfer to hotel/check-in. In the afternoon city tour to Zaisan Monument, Sukhbaatar Square and National History Museum. Welcoming dinner. Overnight stay in a hotel (D)

Day 2Ulaanbaatar – Bayan-Ulgii province

Morning flight to Ulgii city of Bayan-Ulgii province, the western part of Mongolia. The majority of the population of this region is the Kazakh ethnic group, with their own culture and own language. At the local airport, you will meet your English-speaking guide, driver and expedition cook. Today we will drive to Khoton Lake, stopping for lunch on the way, and spending the night at the camping site on Biluut Hill. Here you will find ancient rock carvings of the Turkic origin, which are 1500-2000 years old. Total driving time approximately 6 hours. Overnight in a tent (B/L/D)

Day 3Khoton and Khurgan Lakes

Today we start hiking, passing Aral Tolgoi pass and reach Khoton and Khurgan Lakes along Tsagaan River. These lakes are the second largest and clearest lakes of Mongolia, the average depth is 26m, and the maximum depth approximately 58m. The Khoton and Khurgan Lakes are connected by a wide natural channel. The landscape around the lakes is very beautiful and picturesque, with snow-capped mountains. The car will follow you. Total hiking time: 6 hours. Overnight stay in a tent (B/L/D)

Day 4Altai Tavan Bogd National Park

Hike up the Tsagaan River Valley. Here we will visit Kazakh families and learn about the traditions of the Kazakhs. Camel support. Total hiking time: 5 hours. Vehicles go back to Ulgii city. Overnight stay in a tent (B/L/D)

Day 5Altai Tavan Bogd National Park

Cross the highest pass. Camel support. Total hiking time: 7 hours. Overnight stay in a tent (B/L/D)

Day 6Altai Tavan Bogd National Park

Hike to Shiveet Mountain with stunning beautiful blue lakes, 4000m high snow-capped mountains, a glacier and rich archaeological sites. Camel support. Total hiking time: 6 hours. Overnight stay in a tent (B/L/D)

Day 7Altai Tavan Bogd National Park

Hike to Tsagaan River Valley. We will have a chance to visit Tuvan people, who are a separate ethnic and cultural group within Mongolia, live a nomadic life, and practice Shamanism. Total hiking time: 6 hours. Overnight stay in a tent (B/L/D)

Day 8Altai Tavan Bogd National Park

Today we will hike 18km to the base camp of the Tavan Bogd. Our luggage will be transported by camels and their Tuvan handlers are very friendly and helpful. En route, from 5-6 km away we will see Potanin and Alexander Glaciers, as well as ice peaks. The base camp is 3,000m above sea level. Camel support. Overnight stay in a tent. (B/L/D)

Day 9Altai Tavan Bogd National Park

Glacier exploration. Overnight stay in a tent. (B/L/D)

Day 10Altai Tavan Bogd National Park

Climb to Malchin Peak, 4050m. This peak is the lowest of the Holy Five Peaks on the border of Mongolia and Russia. The climb takes about 6 to 7 hours, all the way up to the top of Malchin peak. Back to the camp after the climb and relax after a long journey. Overnight stay in a tent. (B/L/D)

Day 11Altai Tavan Bogd National Park

Leisure/Free day. Overnight stay in a tent (B/L/D)

Day 12Altai Tavan Bogd National Park

Hike north to Oigor River. Vehicles arrive from Ulgii. Camel support. Overnight stay in a tent (B/L/D)

Day 13Ulgii

Drive back to Ulgii. On the way, we’ll visit Eagle Hunters and a nomad family. Afternoon do some arts and crafts shopping. Farewell dinner. Overnight stay in a tourist camp, take a hot shower. (B/L/D)

Day 14Bayan-Ulgii - Ulaanbaatar

Return flight to Ulaanbaatar. Overnight stay in a hotel. (B/L/D)

Day 15Ulaanbaatar
