The national park of Horgo and the Terkhin Tsagaan lake was created to emphasize the spectacular landscapes of the region and to protect endangered flora and fauna species. Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake. Formerly, an immense mass of lava had blocked the river Terkh and it is its waters which formed the lake. It extends over 16kms long and reaches 20m depth for a total surface of 61sq km.

It is situated at 2.060m height. . Suman river, leaves in waterfalls from the lake and transform to tempestuous torrents then form a canyon and several small lakes. The water of the river is so turbulent that it don't freeze during winter when the temperature are frequently around -30C. In the middle of the lake we can see a volcanic island covered with nests made with perfumed grass name Sam Khan. Here, all day long we can hear birds and the Tadorne Casarca as well as numerous ducks and gooses. Siberian deer, wild bear and the big Cormorant can be seen frequently around the lake during summer time.

The extinct volcano of Khorgo (or Horgo) is surrounded by Khangai mountains, which peak in more than 3000m over the sea level. On a relatively reduced perimeter, there are here about ten extinct volcanoes. We can find in some of the craters small lakes with crystalline water.
 
Khorgo crater, is situated at a 2.210m height and its diameter is 20m wide for 80m depth. There is no lake in this crater, but clouds of vapor rise and form during winter time ice sculpture. From far away we can imagine herds scattered on the mountain. Near the crater we can admire tens small caves with numerous stalactites. Long ago, the volcanic lava flooded in the nearby valleys, which are covered nowadays with varieties of fruits and flowers. In the forest they are many deers, wild goats and other mammals, as well as various birds.

Day-by-day Itinerary

Day 1
        Ulaanbaatar
Arrive in Ulaanbaatar and check-in to 3-star hotel. Half day city tour - National History Museum, Bogd Khan Winter Palace Museum, Zaisan Memorial hill and Sukhbaatar Square. Visit State Department Store Ikh Delguur - or Great Shop - here we can stock up on last minute provisions before starting the next day's journey. (L/D)

Day 2        Ulaanbaatar - Bayangobi
Drive to Elsen Tasarhai sand dunes Visit to Erdene Hamba temple and Sky temple in Hugnu Khan Mountain. Elsen Tasarhai sand dunes located in Burd soum of Uvurhangai province, 270km west of Ulaanbaatar. The area is surrounded by sand dunes, small lake, river and exotic granite mountains. It presents a unique combination of sand dunes and green oasis. Elsen Tasarhai can be conveniently combined with the excursion to Erdene Hamba monastery ruins and the camel trekking to the dunes. Enjoy hiking to the sand dunes or in surrounding areas Camel ride (1 hour) and relaxation in peaceful nature. Overnight in local nomad ger. (B/L/D)

Day 3        Bayangobi - Karakorum
Drive to Karakorum and Erdenezuu monastery. Take photos on the way Erdenezuu monastery. its famous museum. Visit to funny Penis Rock, Great Kings’ monument and Turtle Rock where you may see the panoramic view of Karakorum and Erdenezuu monastery. Hiking to the Orkhon River. Karakorum was a capital of Mongolian Great Empire of Chinggis Khaan in the 13th century. Now it is one of the biggest soum of Mongolia and there are some popular visitors spots. Erdenezuu monastery was established in 1586 and has been a protected since 1944. The monastery has 108 stupas, an active temple and a worthy monastery museum which displays Buddhist cultural items from 16-18th centuries. Overnight in ger camp. (B/L/D)

Day 4        Karakorum – Orkhon waterfall
Drive to Tuvkhun monastery and Orkhon waterfall. Optional horse riding to Tuvkhun monastery. Enjoy the Creation temple of Mongolian first saint. Photographing and admire the nature beauty on the way. Free walking by the Orkhon river and Red waterfall. Visit to a souvenir ger and interest nice stones and some natural exciting items. Tuvkhun monastery is located on the top of a high mountain and it was built in 1654. It was founded and built by Zanabazar, the first head of Mongolian Buddhism. Zanabazar lived, worked and meditated here for 30 years. There are several interesting places surrounding temples. Orkhon waterfall or Ulaan Tsutgalan khurkhree is one of the most touristy places and is located in Bat-Ulzii soum of Uvurkhangai province. The waterfall is over 20m high and 10m wide, and looks most impressive in the rainy season. Overnight in ger camp. (B/L/D)

Day 5        Orkhon waterfall – Tsenkher Hot Spa
Drive to Tsenher hot spa. You can have a bath in the spring water. Hiking in the forest and admire the pretty flowers. Read book outside. Play games. Tsenkher hot spring is located among the forested mountains in Tsenkher soum, Arkhangai province. The spring is 97C and the water is good for your skin and bones. There are 2 small swimming pools dedicated for guests’ bathing. Overnight in ger camp. (B/L/D)

Day 6        Tsenkher Hot Spa - Horgo National Park & Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur
Drive to Horgo National Park & Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur. Visit to legendary Taikhar rock. Take picture on the way and near the Chuluut river canyon. Visit to Zuun Salaa mod which is sacred tree by locals. View the panorama of the National Park and take pictures. A magnificent region of extinct volcanoes in Arkhangai province. The 773 km square area, including Horgo extinct volcano and Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur was protected by Mongolian government since 1965. The area boasts pristine nature, majestic landscape, crystal lake, plenty of small caves and wonderful whole host of myths and legends. Overnight in ger camp. (B/L/D)

Day 7        Horgo National Park & Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur
Today is rest day. Enjoy a hiking to Horgo extinct volcano crater. View the panorama of the National Park and take pictures. Visit to Yellow Dog’s cave, Ice cave and Youth’s cave. Watching the lake birds by the Terkhiin Tsagaan lake. Free hiking on the lake shore and near the camp. Horgo Mountain was an active volcano about 8 thousand years ago. A splendid panorama over the whole region and the lake can be seen from the summit of the volcano. There can be observed numerous birds: Asian Dowitcher, Black Duck, Black Woodpeeker, Far Eastern Curlew, Great Bustard, Lesser Kestrel, Pallas’s Eagle, Relict Gull, Swan Goose, White-napped Crane etc. Overnight in ger camp. Day 8        Horgo & Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur – Tsenkher Soum
After breakfast we drive to Tsetserleg. In town we will visit Zaya Gegeenii Khiid, local market and have lunch in town. After lunch we drive to Taikhar Rock - a large rock stands out in the middle of a plain in Mongolia. The Taikhar chuluu is covered with inscriptions dating back as far as Turkic rule in Mongolia. Those inscriptions were followed by more in the Mongol language, then Tibetan, and even more modern graffiti. After visiting this site we drive to Tsenkher village and stay overnight at local nomad family (B/L/D).

Day 9        Tsenkher Soum - Ulaanbaatar
Drive back to Ulaanbaatar. Lunch in Lun town of Central province. Check-in to 3-star hotel. Rest of time is on your own leisure. (B/L)

Day 10      Ulaanbaatar
After breakfast we will go to International Intellectual museum, shopping for souvenirs, cashmere and woolen products. You have your lunch on your own leisure and choice. In the evening see the Mongolian traditional folklore concert by Tumen Ekh ensemble. International Intellectual Museum displays over 11,000 intellectual items from 130 countries around the world and over 5,000 of them are puzzles. Most of the displays of the museum represent various branches of science in simplified form by using toys and puzzles. Visitors are allowed to touch and challenge themselves by trying to solve the puzzles. National Folklore Concert; it is a witness the wonder of Mongolian throat singing, melodious dancing, pliant contortionism and melodious musical instruments. After farewell dinner you will be transferred to the airport/Departure. (B/D)
